The First Trimester
Essential Oil use is restricted in this period but toning and strengthening oils are useful for the uterus, skin and the blood vessels. Geranium and tangerine work well together at this time; also to help with fluid retention, mood swings and fatigue. Use them with wheat germ, calendula, rosehip and castor oils to prevent stretchmarks.
During the first 36 weeks do not use the following oils- cedar wood, clary sage, rosemary, juniper berry, thyme, jasmine, angelica root, pennyroyal, sage, aniseed, fennel and lemongrass.
The Second and Third Trimester
Cypress and peppermint can be added to your blend to help with circulation and prevent swelling of the legs and hips.
At 36 weeks
Start now preparing your body for labour. Use oils to stimulate circulation and relax the nervous system. Use warming oils such as black pepper, cinnamon leaf, rosemary and thyme in low dilutions.
Use lavender, chamomile, clary sage, and vetiver to calm and strengthen the nerves and also to help you sleep.
A blend can be made to massage the perineum and prevent tears. Use calendula, castor and rosehip oils on the area with tangerine, geranium and cedar wood.
If you are expecting to have a caesarean section use a blend of lavender, tea tree and lemon with rosehip and caster oils on the area for 4 weeks prior to the birthdate.
